How to save the green valley wood industry

The green valley industry is expected to add $1 trillion to U.S. gross domestic product by 2040, according to a new report from the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
It predicts that as demand grows, so will demand for wood products.
But while green valley manufacturers are growing, some are falling short, said Daniel Zegard, executive director of the Wood Product Alliance.
“There is a lot of demand for green valley products, but they’re not doing it fast enough,” Zegar said.
The new report, which will be released Thursday by the Wood Products Alliance, a non-profit organization that represents the largest group of wood products makers, found that green valley makers are experiencing a shortage of labor, raw materials and equipment.
The Wood Product Association, which represents more than 1,500 wood product manufacturers in the U tome, estimated that in 2014 there were more than 600 wood product manufacturing companies.
It says many of the companies have been reluctant to hire people, which has forced them to find other ways to produce products.
“It’s not enough to say, ‘Look, I’m going to have to cut costs and automate, and we’re going to take some of the cost away from the manufacturing process,'” Zegards said.
In the last five years, the report said, the industry has lost about $10 billion in manufacturing jobs, most of it due to automation and a decrease in manufacturing output.
A lack of quality, labor, technology and environmental control is causing problems, it said.
Wood Products Association spokesman David Ruhlmann said the organization is working with local governments to address the shortages.

The Wood Products alliance is part of the U-S-A Alliance for Sustainable Wood Products, a coalition of U.K.-based businesses that includes furniture, cars, watches, cosmetics, electronics and other products made with recycled wood.
The alliance is aiming to build on its success in recent years by promoting the use of wood as a building material and creating new products that can be recycled.
“This is a great opportunity for the wood industry,” said Zegars partner, Bob Brown.
“The fact that we are talking about wood and wood products is really the way we can build on what we have already created and create new things.”
The alliance said it is working to build a supply chain for wood product companies, which are seeking to get their products made at a time when demand is surging.
“These new technologies are going to allow them to move quickly to meet demand and deliver high quality products,” said Brown.
The Alliance is hoping to attract more manufacturing jobs in a global market that includes China, where the United States has an important market share.
The United States is the biggest producer of wood in the world, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the global supply.
The Green Valley Industry Association estimates that in the past five years there have been more than 60,000 job losses in the wood products industry.
